My name is Michael Zengel, and I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. More specifically, I work in the Gedik Lab. I study ultrafast surface dynamics of quantum materials using Time- and Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) and Momentum Microscopy. Through the observation of these dynamics, we’re able to see quantum mechanical effects in “real-time,” watching how electrons behave with different stimuli.
Previously, I received my B.S. in Physics and Math from the University of Alabama in 2025. While there, the bulk of my research was in the Hauser Lab where I used Density Functional Theory to predict the material properties of Heusler Alloys. I also performed X-Ray Diffraction and Reflection measurements on thin film Heuslers.
Other than research, I have a passion for science communication and science policy. At MIT, I’ve gotten involved with the Science Policy Initiative attending and now chairing their State and Local Visit Days.
